Natural selection, variations, and adaptations are a result of genetic mutations that occur randomly in the reproductive process. It is a common misconception that something that happens during an organisms life will be passed on to its offspring. For example a student may believe that someone who donates a kidney and now has 1 kidney, will have children with only 1 kidney. The point of todays lesson is to teach students the difference between an adaptation and acclimation.
Objectives
Students will be able to correctly decipher between Adaptations and Acclimations.
Why do sharks have so many big teeth? --> Why don't all fish have such a beautiful set of veneers? --> Did sharks get lucky? --> What do sharks eat and what do smaller fish eat? --> what would happen if every fish were as big and scary as sharks?
"So the last 2 days we talked about Natural Selection, I want to start today with another short clip that gives a very good view on different variations in animals that were selected to survive." So here I put on the short 7 minute video to bring them back to the topic. How Evolution Works
Engagement
On the board I am going to write the definition for adaptation and acclimation
Adaptation is an inherited trait that increases an organism's chance of survival, they may be physical or instinctual and will continue in future generations.
Acclimation is a short term learned response to an environmental change.
I will then hand out the Adaptation VS Acclimation worksheet and go over the first two problems with the students. Then they will work on it at their desks. (15 min)
After they finish all together we will go over the answers so that everyone understands fully the differences, some of the questions are tough. (5 min)
Closing
Tomorrow we will be having a quiz on Darwin, Natural Selection, and Adaptation vs Acclimation. I want you to study your notes that you have been taking, along with the assignment from today.
Any remaining time we will look at some adaptations in the animal world.
Assessment
Walking around during classwork, I can see if any students are struggling or not by their answers. With that I can help individuals when walking around.
Homework
Study for quiz on Darwin, Natural Selection, and Adaptations vs. Acclimations.
